Is it better to use my domain name or my IP address as the hostname for FTP?

Using your IP address (117.72.124.64 is an example IP address) is a simple way of accessing your hosting account via FTP, but ftp.yourdomain.com will also work and there are pros and cons to both.

The advantage of using the IP address (which you will have beennotified of in the welcome email) :

In the event that you are purchasing a new domain or transferring a domain to us, by using the IP address you can still connect to your site via FTP right away, even though your domain name may not have fully propagated across the whole internet and is therefore useful for this initial couple of days.

However, be aware that if your website changes it's IP address because we move it to a different server or it moved to a dedicated IP address then the login will then fail and for this reason, we always suggest using the domain url (ftp.yourdomain.com) by default
